Political lies and the ads that give them voice |

This campaign season has brought with it an onslaught of political ads, and as always, many have a “casual relationship” with the truth. But why are there no consequences for airing ads that are outright lies? Like this one from Team Romney:

Lying has been a key strategy for Romney, from the beginning. And Romney’s super PAC Restore Our Future got the memo on lying too. After the ad below was released, the Gingrich campaign (with the support of Politifact, which rated the ad a “pants on fire” lie) called for the ad to be pulled. Gingrich’s lawyers cited that the ad was “patently false, misleading and defamatory” in reference to the part that said Gingrich “co-sponsored a bill with Nancy Pelosi … $60 million a year for a UN program supporting China’s brutal one-child policy.” And Gingrich is not alone. This is happening everywhere.
